Everett Thomas is an emerging modern folk artist who brings a soulful, emotive voice, simple yet striking arrangements and poetic, relevant songwriting to the modern music scene. He has readily connected with an audience who prefers the satisfaction of depth and inspiration over the quickly-fading pleasures of today’s sugar-coated pop.

The man himself is deeply conflicted yet at complete rest, his lyrics are richly poetic yet accessible and his music, at once haunting and uplifting. These distinct tensions spring from a life which has experienced the pains of brokenness, disappointment and injustice as well as the joys of love, redemption and hope. His self-released debut EP, Fools and Thinkers, reveals this tension and showcases his vulnerability as a writer and performer. Thomas comments on his songwriting, “I don’t feel like we can escape the things that happen to us in our lives. They become a part of shaping and molding us into who we are. What we can do is decide how we let these things mold us. I began to write. I never really sit down to write something that sends a message. But, I know there is so much more than what this commercial, televised, material world has to offer. There is hope. It took me a long time to realize that. Yet I’m still constantly in motion, trying to realize that. F

illed with a mix of acrylics and metalwork, new artworks created by Chicago-based artist Sonya Ferdinand will soon fill the walls of downtown Racine’s 716: Fine Art. The show, titled “Preceding Red” opens April 3.

Breaking away from the conventional ideas that go into two-dimensional paintings, Ferdinand uses her skills as a Metalsmith to incorporate found objects into her acrylic works.

With her muse inspired by artists like Robert Rauschenberg, Lee Bontecou, Piet Mondrain, Barnett Newman and Frank Lloyd Wright, Ferdinand delights in “layering colors, shapes and various items to create a pragmatic idea of art.”

“Coming from a long line of tailors who painstaking sat sewing together garments for a living,” Ferdinand stitches together a “collective celebration of intellectual and physical performance” in her upcoming show.

“Preceding Red” runs from April 3 through April 22. The opening reception is Friday, April 4 from 6-9 p.m.

The time draws near….

As you may or may not know, I am putting together 716 Fine Art’s new concert series, Inside the Music. We are kicking the season off next Saturday with WAMI Award-winning singer/songwriter Mark Harrod.

Most of you who know me will know Mark, as well. He has played in Copper and The Mahp. When I was in Rainy Day Crush, we shared the stage countless times. He is one of the nicest guys i know. I got the chance to play the guitar for a few gigs with him last summer, including Harborfest and Summerfest. It’s going to be interesting to hear how Mark got to where he is, and why he does the things he does. Things I myself don’t even know the whole story behind….
