TRi
2.15.08

As a graphic designer for the Kenosha News, the opportunity to be creative and let my imagination run wild arise from time to time; however, I am often constrained by the abilities of the newspaper medium, the story restrictions of a small town and the needs of our readers. The show TRi offers a unique chance for me to spread my wings as a designer without the binding ties of an institution holding me back. Taking this flight with David and Emiko fills me with joy and excitement.

For my portion of the show, I wanted to expand upon a piece I’d done late in November during a free moment at work. The piece, which has hung near my desk for the past few months drew on elements from my travels both locally and nationally, continued to irk my creativity. When David approached me about this show, I instantly knew I wanted to expand upon the contradiction of the urban setting and environment.

When looking at one of my pieces, it is my hope that the viewer will be transported away from their space and fall into the energetic confusion of a metropolis. This chaos exudes energy and emotion, the very energy and emotion I reflect in my compositions. Each composition grew organically with no preplanning whatsoever and resulted in abstraction, layering and a general chaos emblematic of the hustle and bustle of large cities.

With large ambitions on the horizon, “big city dreaming” permeates my life, and I’d like to thank David and 716 for the opportunity to “TRi” my hand at fine art.

With the proverbial rabbit close in tow, Bryce M. Ulmer delightfully dives into the wonderful world of graphic design at every chance he gets. A second year design student at Carthage College in Kenosha Wis., Ulmer lives, works, and plays in the Chicago-Milwaukee corridor; drawing inspiration from everyday experience in the area’s rapidly changing environment. At only 20-years-old, he’s new to the world of fine art, but already draws on an impressive resume of local, state and national awards. Having shown at 716: Fine Art, ArtWorks and the H.F. Johnson Gallery at Carthage College, Ulmer is currently a finalist in the Milwaukee Art Museum’s Annual Lakefront Festival of the Arts College Art Competition. Ulmer also edits 716’s magazine of graphic design, Feed.
